What a Gaussian Splat file is

3D Gaussian Splatting is what replaced photogrammetry meshes for capturing a real place: millions of tiny oriented gaussians rather than triangles, which is why a splat scene looks photographic and a mesh of the same room does not. The files come out of SuperSplat, Luma, Postshot, Nerfstudio and the original INRIA code, and they are awkward to open — a gaussian .ply is not a mesh .ply, so ordinary viewers show a grey cloud of dots. This one uses PlayCanvas's SuperSplat renderer, which reads the compressed formats the ecosystem actually moved to and runs on WebGPU where the browser has it.

How to open a Gaussian Splat file

  1. Open your splatDrag in a .ply, .splat, .sog or compressed .ply. It is read from your own disk — a capture of a real place never leaves your machine.
  2. Let it loadA splat scene is millions of gaussians and takes a moment to upload to the GPU. Big scenes want a machine with WebGPU; the viewer falls back to WebGL where there is none.
  3. Orbit itDrag to look around, scroll to move in. A splat is a captured place rather than a model, so it rewards getting close to things.

Questions

Why does my splat look like a grey cloud of dots elsewhere?

Because it is being opened as a mesh. A gaussian .ply stores covariance and spherical-harmonic colour per point instead of faces, so a normal PLY viewer draws the points and throws the rest away. That is the whole reason this is a separate page from the PLY viewer.

Which splat formats does it read?

Uncompressed .ply from the training repos, the compact .splat format, SOG, and compressed .ply. Those last two are what SuperSplat and Luma now export, and they are the ones most web viewers still cannot open.

Is my capture uploaded?

No. The renderer runs in your browser and the file is read from your own disk. Captures of real places are exactly the kind of file people are careful with, which is why this one never leaves the machine.
