What a PLY file is

PLY is what scanners and photogrammetry tools write: a mesh or a raw point cloud, usually with a colour per vertex. This viewer renders both, keeps the vertex colours, and tells you how many points you are actually looking at.

How to open a PLY file

  1. Open your PLY fileDrag it onto the viewer, or click to choose one. Your browser reads it — nothing is uploaded.
  2. Look at it properlyDrag to orbit, scroll to zoom. Advanced adds auto-rotate, a ground plane, wireframe and any background you like.
  3. Compare two versionsTurn on Compare and drop a second PLY file. The cameras lock together, so both move as one.
  4. Save what you seeSave PNG writes exactly the frame on screen, backdrop included, at twice the resolution.

Questions

Does it open point clouds?

Yes. A PLY with no faces is drawn as points, with its vertex colours.

My scan is enormous. Will it open?

Usually. Tens of millions of points will strain a laptop, but the viewer renders what it can and reports the count.

Is my file uploaded anywhere?

No. It is read and rendered by your own browser and never leaves your machine. You can disconnect from the internet once the page has loaded and the viewer still works.
