What an OBJ file is

OBJ is the oldest 3D format still in daily use: plain text, geometry only, with materials living in a separate .mtl file. This viewer opens the geometry, shades it so the surface is readable, and reports the triangle and vertex counts — usually the numbers you opened the file to check in the first place.

How to open an OBJ file

  1. Open your OBJ fileDrag it onto the viewer, or click to choose one. Your browser reads it — nothing is uploaded.
  2. Look at it properlyDrag to orbit, scroll to zoom. Advanced adds auto-rotate, a ground plane, wireframe and any background you like.
  3. Compare two versionsTurn on Compare and drop a second OBJ file. The cameras lock together, so both move as one.
  4. Save what you seeSave PNG writes exactly the frame on screen, backdrop included, at twice the resolution.

Questions

Where are my materials?

In the .mtl file next to the .obj, which the browser is never handed. The geometry renders with a neutral studio material instead — for textured review, export to GLB.

Is my file uploaded anywhere?

No. It is read and rendered by your own browser and never leaves your machine. You can disconnect from the internet once the page has loaded and the viewer still works.

Can I compare two files?

Yes — that is what Compare does. Load one on each side and the cameras lock together: rotate, pan or zoom one and the other follows exactly, which is the only reliable way to spot a change by eye.
