What a USDZ file is

USDZ is Apple's AR package: a zipped USD scene that iOS opens in Quick Look. On a Mac or an iPhone that is easy; everywhere else there is nothing to double-click. This viewer opens the geometry and materials in any browser, which is usually all you need to check that an asset is right before it ships.

How to open a USDZ file

  1. Open your USDZ fileDrag it onto the viewer, or click to choose one. Your browser reads it — nothing is uploaded.
  2. Look at it properlyDrag to orbit, scroll to zoom. Advanced adds auto-rotate, a ground plane, wireframe and any background you like.
  3. Compare two versionsTurn on Compare and drop a second USDZ file. The cameras lock together, so both move as one.
  4. Save what you seeSave PNG writes exactly the frame on screen, backdrop included, at twice the resolution.

Questions

Will everything in the file render?

Geometry and standard materials do. USD is a large specification and the browser reader covers the common subset — a complex shader graph may render more simply here than in Quick Look.

Is my file uploaded anywhere?

No. It is read and rendered by your own browser and never leaves your machine. You can disconnect from the internet once the page has loaded and the viewer still works.

Can I compare two files?

Yes — that is what Compare does. Load one on each side and the cameras lock together: rotate, pan or zoom one and the other follows exactly, which is the only reliable way to spot a change by eye.
