What a 3MF file is

3MF is what STL should have been: the same triangles, but with units, colour, materials and multiple objects in one zipped package. Modern slicers write it by default. This viewer opens it with the colours intact and the real-world size, which is the thing STL could never tell you.

How to open a 3MF file

  1. Open your 3MF fileDrag it onto the viewer, or click to choose one. Your browser reads it — nothing is uploaded.
  2. Look at it properlyDrag to orbit, scroll to zoom. Advanced adds auto-rotate, a ground plane, wireframe and any background you like.
  3. Compare two versionsTurn on Compare and drop a second 3MF file. The cameras lock together, so both move as one.
  4. Save what you seeSave PNG writes exactly the frame on screen, backdrop included, at twice the resolution.

Questions

Why 3MF instead of STL?

Because 3MF carries units, colour and materials, and STL carries none of them. A 3MF opens at the size it was designed at.

Is my file uploaded anywhere?

No. It is read and rendered by your own browser and never leaves your machine. You can disconnect from the internet once the page has loaded and the viewer still works.

Can I compare two files?

Yes — that is what Compare does. Load one on each side and the cameras lock together: rotate, pan or zoom one and the other follows exactly, which is the only reliable way to spot a change by eye.
