What an IFC file is

IFC is how a building model moves between Revit, ArchiCAD, Tekla and everything else: the open BIM exchange format, and usually the file a consultant sends when you do not own their software. This viewer parses it with WebAssembly in your own browser and renders the geometry. That matters more here than anywhere else in this section — architecture and engineering firms are routinely barred by contract from uploading a client's model to a web service, and every free IFC viewer in these results is an upload.

How to open an IFC file

  1. Open your IFCDrag the .ifc onto the viewer. It is parsed by WebAssembly in your own browser — the model never reaches a server, which is the part that matters when it is a client's.
  2. Wait for the geometryA building model is large and the first parse takes a few seconds. The statistics row tells you the schema version and how many elements were read.
  3. Look around itDrag to orbit, scroll to zoom, right-drag to pan. Advanced adds a ground plane, a wireframe and any background colour you like.
  4. Save what you seeSave PNG writes exactly the frame on screen, backdrop included.

Questions

Does it support IFC2X3 and IFC4?

Both. The parser is web-ifc, the same engine behind most of the open-source BIM tooling, and it reads IFC2X3, IFC4 and IFC4X3. The schema version of your file is shown with the statistics once it opens.

How large a file can it open?

The limit is your machine, not our server, because there is no server. Models up to a few hundred megabytes open on a normal laptop; above that the browser runs out of memory, so the viewer refuses the file with a clear message instead of freezing the tab.

Can I see element properties?

Not yet. This version renders geometry — walls, slabs, structure and MEP as they were exported. The property panel is the obvious next step and the API already exposes the data, so it is a question of when, not whether.

Is my file uploaded anywhere?

No. It is read and rendered by your own browser and never leaves your machine. You can disconnect from the internet once the page has loaded and the viewer still works.
