STL is the 3D printing format: triangles and nothing else — no colour, no units, no materials. That makes it fast to open and easy to check, which is exactly what this viewer is for. The statistics panel gives you the triangle count and the bounding box, so you can confirm the size before you send it to a printer.

How to open an STL file

  1. Open your STL fileDrag it onto the viewer, or click to choose one. Your browser reads it — nothing is uploaded.
  2. Look at it properlyDrag to orbit, scroll to zoom. Advanced adds auto-rotate, a ground plane, wireframe and any background you like.
  3. Compare two versionsTurn on Compare and drop a second STL file. The cameras lock together, so both move as one.

Questions

Does it read binary and ASCII STL?

Both. The parser detects which one it is; you do not have to say.

Why does my model have no colour?

Because STL cannot carry any. Every STL is shaded by whichever viewer opens it.

Is my file uploaded anywhere?

No. It is read and rendered by your own browser and never leaves your machine. You can disconnect from the internet once the page has loaded and the viewer still works.
